Western Front 7.28am 1st July 1916: The Lochnagar Crater

Aerial photograph of the mine explosion under enemy trenches at the start of the Battle of the Somme. At 7.30am 27 divisions with 750,000 mainly British soldiers faced the Germans. At the end of that first day there were 57,740 British casualties: 19,000 killed.
