U Bein, the eponymous Chief Minister to King Bodapaya, was commanded to build a bridge over a lake near Amarapura. He did so using wood only with teak supporting pillars. This was in 1846 and is the world's longest teak bridge. For his pains he was  killed atthe king's orders.
